We have some interesting changes for 2005! You might notice that the links in the main menu at the left have changed and there is a new look to the pages where you maintain your account, but the most important development is that we have simplified the whole subscription thing. Instead of the complex system of selecting a 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month subscription, now you just (1) put some money into your SimsHost account and (2) turn on your subscription. Your subscription will renew from month to month, using funds from your account, just as it does now. That's all there is to it.

If you do the arithmetic, you will see that the basic subscription rates really have not changed. Continuing subscribers still renew, using money from their SimsHost accounts, at the same rate; however we added an activation fee so that a 3-month subscription still costs what it always has.

You can turn off your subscription at any time. If you restart it within 30 days, it picks up on the day it left off and the activation fee does not apply. After 30 days, and of course for new subscriptions, the activation fee does apply. It's as simple as that.

The other big change is that after more than two years of resisting it, we determined that we have to change the download fee so that we can get SimsHost on a more solid financial footing. The rate we started with in on June 1, 2002 has never been quite adequate to cope with the costs, so the time has come to fix it. The good news is that it's still going to average less than a penny per download for all the standard downloads.

We also added a feature where you can download things without subscribing. You still will need to create and fund your SimsHost account, but instead of paying the subscription dues, if you have not turned on your subscription we charge your account a flat fee per download in addition to the per-megabyte rate.

In addition to all that, now you can create and verify your SimsHost account without funding it at all. That will soon become important as we move toward requiring a login for our public service features such as submitting changes to the Ultimate Sims List and free public downloads. There's one other thing, too: now the email addresses listed in your account must be verified before you can use the account, and you can have one primary and up to three alternate verified email addresses associated with your account.

These changes do not affect existing subscriptions. Your subscription will continue according to the old rules until you renew or add money to your SimsHost account.

With such extensive changes to the system we're bound to have overlooked some broken or stale links, so if you find any, please stop by the SimsHost Hullabaloo and let us know about it!
